Brick Decorations in Persian Vernacular Architecture: Case Study of Dezful
The traditional architecture of the historical cities of Iran (post-Islam era) has always expressed the Iranian-Islamic culture of the native people. Architecture is a unique art that has always become more complete and enriched due to the evolution of the experiences of masters in different periods of history. The old architects have used various methods in the building to respond to the climatic, cultural and social needs of the residents. Islam's emphasis on respect for hierarchies and emphasis on privacy of spaces in Muslim architecture and urban planning, including the city of Dezful located in Khuzestan province of Iran, has caused this feature to affect all social and cultural aspects. The houses of the Qajar era in Dezful city are a valuable example of contemporary Persian architecture, which have been well adapted to the special climatic conditions of Khuzestan. On the other hand, in the specific architecture of the underground levels of traditional houses in the warm and semi-humid climate of Iran, including in the city of Dezful, one can see solutions of climate design and accordingly meeting human needs in order to provide comfort. The main element of the old body of Dezful city is brick. The use of brick includes all the components of the structure to the decorations of the old texture of Dezful. With the skill of architects and old masters, many beautiful and diverse decorative combinations of bricks have been formed. Knowing the solutions of architects in the old context of Dezful city, especially the houses of the Qajar dynasty period, can open the way for contemporary Muslim architecture. In this chapter of the book, with studies and field observations of the houses of Dezful city; Eight prominent traditional houses are introduced and their architectural features such as the interior and exterior, the public and private zoning of the house spaces, the use of the covered porch, the middle and intermediate corridors between the spaces, the way of controlling the openings, documenting and introducing the types of Brick motifs of Dezful texture are investigated.
