Challenges of Climatic Modelling Persian Vernacular Architecture and Solutions to Overcoming Them
The rate, scale of the growth and variety of new data sources relating to the built environment are challenging. The modelling of vernacular buildings architecture with innovative programmes has the potential to provide more integrated design and analysis tools than were traditionally available. However, in an often traditional construction industry, the challenges is to be aware of what is on offer and identify which tools are practically best suited to a particular purpose. In this chapter, a range of functions of models used to analyse vernacular architecture are reviewed, prioritised, and categorised by use and usefulness. Optimisation tools for the reduction of energy consumption in buildings are widely used and here these tools, along with building energy simulation software are evaluated as potentially powerful tools to described and understand the climatic design characteristics of Iranian architecture. The limitations and capabilities of different optimisation algorithms within models in actually reducing the amount of energy consumption in the building are presented, with a view to understanding where the gaps in the use of optimisation and simulation algorithms exist, removing them or providing patches to those gaps to improve the accuracy of the models of the climatic functions of the often very complex performance of the traditional building in Iran. The study starts with a literature review of five widely used building energy optimisation and simulation programs. Their software criteria, applications, capabilities, and limitations were defined and compared. According to the opinions of optimisation experts in Iran, some challenges and potential solutions to overcome them were extracted by the Delphi method. The result of the research indicates that the lack of training and skill creation in the architectural community makes the use of these new tools very limited, so there is a need for optimisation experts as analysts. Therefore, it is necessary to take codified actions on the educational and professional levels to expand the knowledge of optimisation based on the needs of architects.
