Transition Dipoles of Polyacetylene Oligomers
Abstract Quantum mechanical calculations of nonlinear optical susceptibilities often involve perturbation sums over transition dipoles. Unfortunately, there is little experimental data that can be used to evaluate the reliability of the calculated dipoles. To provide some reference data and answer questions about the dependence of these dipoles on polyene chain length we have measured 11Ag to 11Bu transition dipoles for the α,ω-diphenyl polyenes with 2 through 8 double bonds in the polyene chain. The α,ω-diphenyl polyenes were dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide, methylene chloride and toulene. The in vacuo electronic transition dipole moment from the ground state (11Ag) to the second excited singlet state (11Bu) was determined to converge to an asymptotic value of 11.1±0.4 Debye.
