Spatial-Functional Transformation of Military Brownfields on the Example of Sites in Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
It is fact that almost all urban areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina had barracks and other military facilities or training grounds that over time acquired new functions or were still not valorized. The spatial analysis in the paper focused on the military brownfields of the capital and largest city of this country, which is divided by the entity border. That is precisely why were analyzed four examples of spatial-functional transformation of military brownfields in the area of Sarajevo in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and East Sarajevo in the Republic of Srpska. With a combination of field research, GIS, satellite and cartographic data sources, we obtained the results of spatial changes, the current state and functions of abandoned military facilities, as well as land. It was found that the largest number of buildings and especially land received a residential function, but also became an area for the construction and organization of university campuses or other public institutions. During the research were also found problems related to the reduction of green areas and the expansion of settlements, the unresolved issue of property-legal relations, the problem of housing refugees who are still using individual buildings for housing, etc. Although military bases are located in urbanized zones, the presence of unused (ruins) facilities was also established. Nevertheless, there are significantly more positive examples of the new purpose of these buildings and land, where we particularly highlight the sports and recreational role that improved and enriched life in both cities.
