Abstract On December 30, 1925, at an organic chemistry symposium of the American Chemical Society in Rochester, New York, Father Nieuwland of Notre Dame University reported on his research on acetylene gas,1,2 and it was there that Dr. Elmer K. Bolton of the Du Pont Company became interested in Nieuwland’s work. Out of their discussions came an alliance and unique research effort between Notre Dame and a group of Du Pont scientists including Wallace Carothers, Arnold Collins, William Calcott, and A. S. Carter. For his contributions in the field of acetylene and chloroprene chemistry, Arnold Collins later received the Charles Goodyear Medal from the Rubber Division.3
