Pedestrian forces on footbridges can produce vibration phenomena. These vibrations generally do not cause any damage to the structure, but can lead to discomfort felt by pedestrians. The design guide proposed by the working group Sétra/AFGC gives a state of the art in the field of dynamic behaviour of footbridges under pedestrian loads. It proposes a method of analysis and some recommendations to guide the designer of a new footbridge to consider dynamic effects. The design method is based on the notion of footbridge class (depending on the traffic level) and the comfort requirement. The document includes some practical methods to calculate frequencies and modes, response to dynamic loadings and give recommendations for the writing of design and works specifications.
