This experimental study shows the influence of the improvement of concrete and steel mechanical properties on the cracking behaviour of reinforced concrete beams under short-term loading. We mainly noticed that during the stabilized cracking phase, the mean crack spacing does not seem to vary with concrete strength; on the other hand, the use of high-strength concrete, for a given load, allows 30% reduction in the mean crack width compared with ordinary concretes.
