Expert System for the Calibration of SMAP
The Soil Moisture Accounting Procedure Model—SMAP is a conceptual rainfall-runoff model that simulates the hydrologic cycle as a set of two linear reservoirs. The model was tailored to be used in developing countries where the scarcity of data is (1 constant. Despite being a relatively simple model, SMAP had its use is limited by the difficulties thatusers have found during its calibration.
This paper describes the development of a very interactive support framework for the calibration of SMAP. The program, called SMAPEX, employs expert system technology to perform a subjective calibration of SMAP und to set guidelines for a mathematical optimization of parameters. The combination between objective and heuristic processing was met with the use of mathematical simulation and expert system technology. This hybrid concept proved to be very efficient in facilitating the use of the hydrologic model.
