A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Assessing Baghdad universities: informative framework for relevant development plans
Alongside the destruction of most of Iraq’s infrastructure, the country’s education system has been severely damaged by war, sanctions and terrorism. To help effect the rebuilding of Baghdad’s universities, the preliminary aim of this research is to assess their current status, and then to propose a comprehensive plan. To tackle the research problem, three universities were selected for the research setting. Data were gathered from written ‘grey’ material, and the research methodology was twofold: a descriptive method to assess environmental sustainability and an analytical method depending on ‘space syntax’ to assess urban structure. The comprehensive plan was divided into the core and the properties. The results revealed that Baghdad universities face an unbalanced urban structure and environmental obstacles, showing that their sites are both isolated from their urban surroundings and below environmental standards. The study concludes that an informative framework can improve understanding of the nature of these accumulative problems.
