The author, who is director of the Building & Road Research Institute, Ghana, reports long experience in that country on the problems associated with low-rise building on difficult soils, Various types of soil and their characteristics arc identified, with references to a wealth of literature, and alternatires to standard strip foundations, including the promising reinforced strip foundation, are discussed. A plea is made for international co-ordination of research results in order to produce guidance manuals on this major problem.
