Evaluation of the airport runway flexible pavement macro-texture using digital image processing technique (DIPT)
In this paper, we have explored and compared different digital image processing techniques on 2D Images of asphalt pavement for evaluating the macro-texture. Compared to the conventional tests, image processing provides a fast, reliable, and low-cost method with less computational complexity. The images were acquired using a digital camera on a fixed tripod at one angle (90°). We have studied three main digital image processing methods: Butterworth band-pass filter, edge pixels count and fuzzy logic edge detection. The derived parameters were compared with the measured mean texture depth using the sand patch test that was conducted at the same spots where images were captured in the airfield. In our analysis, both regression models of edge pixel count and fuzzy logic edge detection methods showed a good correlation (R 2 = 0.75; 0.76) with MTD data.
