The function of natural ventilation in outdoor spaces around houses in a humid tropical climate condition is discussed. Methods to estimate the outdoor ventilation between the houses were developed. A new medium density housing development in Townsville, Australia is studied using particle erosion and tracer gas methods. The relative natural ventilation in outdoor space around sample houses is estimated and analysed. Improvement in outdoor natural ventilation in medium density housing is explored.
