In the humid tropics, the conditions of indoor cross-ventilation for houses in medium-density developments is strongly influenced by surrounding houses. Building models for wind tunnel studies should cover both sufficient land area and number of houses within the immediate neighbourhood, to allow for this influence. The scale for this type of building model is small e.g. 1:200. In such small models, it is difficult, time-consuming and costly to install the conventional tapping pressure probes for measuring the pressure coefficients on a number of model houses in a wind tunnel. A low-cost and efficient method for pressure coefficient measurement on small-scale house models at medium densities was therefore developed. The indoor cross-ventilation potentials of the sample houses in a new subdivision of Townsville were investigated using this method and a computer model. Improvement in cross-ventilation through housing design, without alteration to neighbouring houses, was explored.
