Earlier removal of concrete formwork
Formwork accounts for an appreciable part of the cost of in situ concrete. If this shuttering could safely be struck from the concrete more quickly, measurable benefits would result. However, the striking times commonly followed are minimum periods, based largely on empirical knowledge which, for safety, ignores the fact that the concrete is itself generating heat during hydration. Research has examined factors making for optimum striking times, and the results are now embodied in a series of tables to guide engineers and builders.
