ENERGY LOSS DUE TO SHARP EDGED ELLIPTICAL ORIFICE PLATES
The results of an experimental investigation concerning the loss coefficient for concentric, sharp edged elliptical orifice plates in a pipe line have been presented in this paper. Data were collected on five elliptical orifice plates with orifice area to pipe area ratio as 0.2, 0.33, 0.5, 0.66 and 0.84, keeping the major axis of the plates horizontal (displacement angle θ = 0°) as well as vertical (θ = 90°). Five concentric circular orifice plates with same area ratios have also been tested for comparative study. The range of pipe Reynolds number was 1.0 θ 103 to 4.0 θ 104 while loss coefficient C L varies from 0.09 to 80.0. It was found that for low pipe Reynolds number, loss coefficient is a function of area ratio and pipe Reynolds number but for high pipe Reynolds number (Rp ≥ 2.0 × 104), loss coefficient is invariant of Reynolds number and only depends on area ratio. It is also found that there is little effects of displacement angle and elliptically on the loss coefficient.
