Integrating Architectural Science Understanding into the Architectural Design Process
Following Schön's description of the design process, it is necessary that the architectural science input to design is available to the architect as a repertoire of examples, images and understandings. While such a repertoire may develop slowly through the professional life of an architect, it is argued that the way architectural science material is taught is crucial to establishing the framework within which such a repertoire can be stored, as well as providing the key images and understandings from which the more detailed repertoire can be built.
In an analogous way it is argued that a predominantly scientific or engineering based approach to the design of the interior environment all too often leads to a non-natural response of the building to the external environment.
This has led to occupants attempting to subvert the environmental system of their building and, in turn, to the proscribing of their participation in the establishment of comfort conditions. Techniques for presenting architectural science in a form which is readily assimilable into the design process are discussed.
