Regional development planning in Malaysia
Alden J. D. and Awang A. H. (1985) Regional development planning in Malaysia, Reg. Studies 19, 495–508. The article examines the process of regional development planning in Malaysia, with particular reference to the extent of regional welfare differentials and regional strategies aimed at combating such problems. The article emphasizes the priority attached to regional development planning in Malaysia and identifies the various strategies which have been adopted to achieve the objectives of regional development. The strategies include: resource and new land development; in-situ rural development; industrial dispersal; rural urbanization; and creation of new growth centres. After noting some considerable achievements made by these regional development strategies, the article concludes by citing some reasons why regional welfare differentials have been difficult to reduce, and why targets of the Fourth Malaysian Plan 1981–5 have not been met.
