Friction welding stud shear connectors to steel beams
Stud shear connectors are often used in composite beam construction to provide integral action between steel beams and a concrete deck slab. These studs are usually attached to beam flanges using an arc stud-welding process. Experience had shown that with arc stud welding, problems were frequently found with incorrectly welded studs when the stud diameter was greater than 20 mm. The main advantages of friction welding were its apparent ability to weld large stud diameters and the possibility of automating the entire welding process.
