Thermal shock testing of calcium aluminate bonded refractory concretes
A thermal shock test which uses a dry cooling media of fluidized alumina was developed for castable concretes. Specimens are held in an electric furnace until temperature equilibrium is established between thes pecimen and furnace, transferred rapidly into the fluidized alumina and held until temperature equilibrium is re-established. The test temperature range is 2000 to 140 F. Thermal shock damage was assessed by sonic resonant frequency and four-point bend strength testing for sintered tabular and fused alumina aggregates bonded with a high purity calcium aluminate cement.
