Spanning the Avon
The Avonmouth Bridge is 1387 m long with a main span of 173.7 m rising 30.5 m above the river. The majority of the components were fabricated from BS 4360 Grade 50 C high yield steel. MMA welding with low hydrogen electrodes was used for off site fabrication and the automatic 'Fusarc' system with continuous coated electrodes was used together with CO2 welding, for on-site assembly. The completed bridge consists of two continuously welded box girders fabricated from individual box sections.
