Eliminating short guy leads through better pole embedment
This paper proposes that higher class wood poles, greater embedment depths, and/or better backfill materials be used to successfully eliminate short guy leads on distribution lines and minimize the problem of pole leaning. Several theories of the behavior of a pole resisting a lateral load are examined. A simplified model of soil embedment resistance to lateral pole loads is developed. A matheamtical approach is presented for determining embedment depths for a pole embedded directly in the soil and for a pole embedded in an improved backfill material. These equations can be used to prepare embedment depth charts for ranges of pole sizes, pole classes,assumed soil characteristics, and improved backfill material properties. These charts can be used to estimate the increased resistance of poles to lateral loads by the use of extra setting depth or better backfill material. An example is included.
