The performance of earth dams during earthquakes
Some dams suffer severe damage when subjected to minor seismic events, while others subjected to more severe shaking survive with little or no damage. One common characteristic of the survivors appears to be the construction materials of which clayed soils have one of the best responses. Piping is also a contributory factor to damage following an earthquake.
