Telemetry systems today are so highly developed that there are many situations here they can compete with both LAN-based DDC distributed control systems and at the other end of the scale with PLC type networks. As with virtually every other area of monitoring and control that uses electronics, the expanding role of telemetry has come about primarily because of increasing microprocessor power and decreasing cost. Together these make it possible to put intelligence into the smallest of remote outstations while making the central operator's console infinitely more capable. The discussion describes some telemetry systems and in particular that being used by the Severn Trent Water Authority Soar Division Scheme.
