Concentration of brines of desalination plants in electrodialysers
Application of desalination plants to produce water adequate for drinking is limited by the tow factors: high cost and great amount of brine, constituting 25-75% of the total volume of the treated water. The problems of the highest concentration in salt and brackish waters desalination in electrodialysers with closed brine compartments are presented in the given paper. The application of such units allows to decrease the amount of the brine up to 1-5%. Based on the current conceptions of electroosmotic transference of water through ion membranes, assumptions are made concerning the effect of physical and chemical properties of membranes and solutions, as well as electrical and hydrodynamic parameters, on the degree of the brine concentration.
