Diffusion bonding plus casting

Economic and technical advantages can often be realised by combining welding with casting for the fabrication of assemblies, especially where they are large and complex. Additionally, welding can be used for the repair or recovery of castings and for incorporating castings into fabricated assemblies. Diffusion bonding is probably the simplest welding process, and is readily applicable to more materials and dissimilar material combinations than any other process. Some of the advantages obtained when diffusion bonding is applicable are very pertinent to the joining of castings. Its value for use with castings, its advantage, joint quality, and properties are discussed, and the present situation regarding the development of the process is outlined.
