Testing of dampers for the base isolation of a proposed 4-storey building against earthquake attack
The testing of steel dampers intended for use in the base isolation of a 4-storey office building in Wellington is described. The dampers, which are of the double-cantilever steep type, are to be used in conjunction with rubber bearings carrying the weight of the building. Hysteresis loops obtained under dynamic loading are given. A relationship between surface strain and number of cycles to failure for the low-cycle fatigue of mild steel is put forward which can be used in the design of both dampers and reinforcing bars. (Hannebauer)
