A new technique for moment-thrust-curvature calculations for columns in biaxial bending
When material non-linearity is taken into account, moment-thrust-curvature calculations form an integral part of any column instability analysis. Existing procedures resort to the subdivision of the cross-section into sufficiently small elements, calculation of an average stress assumed to be acting uniformly over the area of each of these elements, and subsequent direct summation of the forces and moments about the centroidal axes. Bernoulli-Navier assumption - plane sections remain plane - is adopted and arbitrary material stress-strain characteristics can be specified. In this paper, an alternative technique using Gaussian quadrature formulare is described. The procedure consists of first subdividing any rectangular cross-sectional area into a number of triangles and trapezoids, with their base always parallel to the neutral axis.
