The economic and practical advantages of variable speed centrifugal pumping
It is seldom that a circulating or distributing water network operation requires a fixed flow and pressure on a continuous basis. If it does, a fixed speed centrifugal pump is totally adequate since it is compact, cheap and reliable and runs on a reasonably efficient basis. Where a variable flow exists and depending upon the nature of the application, other controls need to be incorporated in a system to either modify the effect of the pump's inherent head/flow characteristics or to by-pass surplus requirements of a system so as to allow the pump to operate at a single duty performance. Many forms of these controls exist but the pump always operates as the system itself dictates rather than having its own control reference. Variable speed centrifugal pumps are given this reference and thus dictate the conditions existing in a system depending upon whether they be pressure, flow, level or some other predetermined characteristic.
