A study of shield tunnelling machine (Part 2) - Soil condition for pressure holding mechanized shield to be adapted
The most suitable soil for the pressure holding mechanized shield machine as well as excavation conditions were investigated and statistically analyzed during actual use. During excavation, sandy soil was found to be best for the pressure holding mechanized shield. Solid cohesive soil adheres to the walls of the pressure chamber, blocking its passage. In case of sandy or gravelly soil, it was found that the soil in the pressure chamber was apt to stick because of the difficulty of making it more apparent plastic. An outline of suitable soil content is as follows: Clay and silt (particles under 0.074 mm in diameter) content should account for more than 7 % on a particle size distribution curve. Gravel (particles over 2 mm in diameter) content should account for less than 70 % on a particle size distribution curve. Cohesive soil (containing over 40 % clay or silt) should have an N-value of less than 15. Natural water content should he more than 18 % in sandy soil 25 % in cohesive soil.
