A study of shield tunnelling machine (Part 1) - Soil condition for pressurized slurry shield to be adapted
The most suitable soil for the pressurized slurry shield machine as well as excavation conditions were statistically analyzed and investigated during actual use. During excavation, sandy soil was found best for the slurry shield. Solidly cohesive soil adheres to the walls of the pressure chamber, blocking its passage. The cutting face of sandy soil with a high content of gravel is not easily stabilized and is apt to collapse in the slurry. An outline of collapsible soil content is as follows: Gravel (particles over 2 mm in diameter) should account for over 60 % of content in the particle size distribution curve. Clay and silt (particles under 0.074 mm in diameter) should account for under 10 % of content in the particle size distribution curve, Natural water content should be less than 18 %. Cobble stones of 200-300 mm in size should be mixed into the soil.
