A study of shield tunnelling machines (Part 4) - Slime shields
Slime shields have been developed and used for tunnelling where soil conditions make excavation with pressurized slurry and pressure-holding mechanical shields difficult. The slime shield combines the liquid pressurization technique of the pressurized slurry shield with the plastic mass support technique of the pressure-holding shield, making it adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. The ribbon screw type slime shield is useful for excavating the sandy gravel soils containing cobbles of from 1/6 to 1/5 the outer diameter, while the double screw type slime shield is useful for clayey or sandy soils, making them plastic soil by means of its mixing effect. In actual use, both types have fulfilled their designed functions and achieved excellent excavation results.
