A study of shield tunnelling machine (Part 3) - Conditions for stability and other hydrodynamic problems in the slime (pressurized slurry) shield machine
The pressurized slurry shield machine can be adapted for cutting the sandy soil with high underground water level and had being put to many practical uses. To use this machine in other kinds of soil, the slime shield machine has being developed in Hitachi Zosen based on the technology of the pressurized slurry shield machine. This new machine uses the slime having higher-density and viscosity than the slurry. In this paper, the hydrodynamic problems focussing in the stability of the cutting face are described. Main results are as follows: Analyzing theoretically the conditions for the stability of the cutting face, the conditions necessary for the slime density and the slime pressure were introduced. The phenomenon of the non-permeable filmy layer formation which is indispendable for the stability of the cutting face was analyzed and confirmed with the experiment. In this analysis, the seepage flow of slime is treated as the flow in a pipe. The terminal falling velocity in many kinds of slime was measured. With these experimental results ,the generalized method to calculate the terminal falling velocity in a non-Newtonian fluid was established.
