Proper arrangement of diversion gates
The paper discusses the hydraulic problems encountered with the model tests and the closure of the Itumbiara diversion gates. The model tests revealed large hydrodynamic forces caused by the downward flow in the gate shaft. Gate closure problems which occurred during attempts to improve gate sealing conditions are also described. The present paper stresses the need of avoiding water overflowing into gate shafts and suggests that minor leakage on diversion gates should be reduced or eliminated preferably by lowering sealing materials from the upstream surface rather than reopening and reclosure of gates.
