Liquid slag treatment guarantees high product quality of steel slags
The utilisation of BOF steel slag on fields of application with high quality demands often is limited owing to the insufficient volume stability. The most common method to increase volume stability of the slags is weathering, which requires time and a lot of space. To avoid these disadvantages, Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG (TKS) together with Forschungsgemeinschaft Eisenhüttenschlacken e.V (FEhS) have developed a process treating liquid slag to minimise the free lime content in the slag. By treating the slag in the presented process a high sophisticated product is manufactured, that can be used in fields of application with highest quality demands. Thus, the use of BOF slag in the building industry can be guaranteed which will allow to produce iron and steel ecologically and economically in the future. The necessary expenditures for the process equipment and the process media are compensated by the higher proceeds for the high quality product. Again, this measure shows that recycling in steel making is of high priority. Slags from iron and steel making are valuable products that have a real market.
