Reuse of filter backwash water using ultrafiltration technology
A safe retention of microorganisms in combination with high fluxes are essential for a successful application of ultrafiltration in the treatment of filter backwash water. High fluxes can be maintained for long time periods by tailoring the module flushing procedure to the individual application. It has been demonstrated that the combination of feedside air injection and permeate backwash can reduce the consumption of chemicals significantly - a chemical cleaning every 3-4 months is sufficient. The pilot plant was operated with a new polyacrylonitrile membranes with a cut-off of 200 kD. The membrane showed a very high permeability and operated at a flux of about 115 l/m2h. With this membrane the design capacity of the plant was achieved.
