Regulating Filter Backwash Water
The 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) require the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to regulate recycling of filter backwash water within the treatment process of a public water system. The agency must issue this regulation by August 2000, unless recycling of filter backwash water has been addressed in the Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (ESWTR) before then.
