In-situ ultrasonic study of high-alumina castables
Young's modulus changes in high-alumina castables were non-destructively measured from room temperature to 1600 deg C using a laboratory-made ultrasonic apparatus. Besides Young's modulus experiments, quantitative X-ray diffraction, dilatometry, surface area, and porosimetry tests were used to investigate hydrate decomposition, phase changes, sintering phenomena, and effect of silica-fume addition. Elastic moduli of calcium aluminates were measured as a function of porosity and extrapolated to zero-porosity. Non-destructive measurement of Young's modulus is a valuable technique for studying the influence of heat treatments and the role of additives on the castable behavior.
