There are currently four electrical technologies used to maintain the temperature of fluids in pipes; heater tape, mineral insulated cables and elements, current tubes and induction heating. The technologies involved in heater tape and heating elements are similar, the main difference being that the electrical supply to a tape system is connected at a single point whereas the supply to a heater cables needs to be connected to the two extremities. Current tubes are more widely used in the USA than in France. The principle of operation is simple but the technique requires that the pipework be insulated. An induction heater consists of a narrow steel tube attached to the induction generator.
