High density fill as grouting slurry of roof fall material in coal mines
A major part of Silesia region, PL, is undermined. Because of complicated infrastructure and long duration of mining operations there are many difficulties related to subsidence of ground surface, mine ventilation, water pumping, spontaneous combustion, rock bursts and methane emission. In recent years in Poland a special attention has been paid to the environmental protection. The coal industry has been developing new mining methods, especially related to mining thick seams, backfilling of underground voids and underground waste disposal. The use of fly ash, tailings, cement and water as compaction grout of roof fall material in the gob area has had a very great impact on mining practice in Polish coal mines. Grouting the caving area results in reduction of surface subsidence and spontaneous ignitions of coal, in improved ventilation and face conditions in particular the stability of gates. The paper discusses various criteria to be considered in the preparation of a grouting slurry, fill distribution systems, mining geometry and placement methods.
