Powder coatings: the ultimate solution for wood coatings?
The properties and performance of 2 commercial powder coating systems, a UV powder and a low-bake powder, applied to medium density fibreboard (MDF) are presented and compared. One system was based on Crylcoat 7202 for low-bake coatings and one on Uvecoat 3000 for UV-curable coatings. Attractive finishes can be achieved with both low-bake powder and UV powder. UV powder technology offers the added advantage of very high productivity, low energy consumption and high-quality finishes. As the heating conditions required are milder, the choice of MDF is less critical. Because of these milder curing conditions, the use of UV powder technology for coating MDF and certain types of hardwood have already proven successful. General discussion are also given of powders on MDF (general principles and benefits, UV powder versus low-bake powder (advantages of UV powder versus low-bake and vice versa), and choosing the right MDF.
