Chemical resistance properties of matt waterborne clear and pigmented lacquers
The potential influence on the chemical resistance of matting agents when incorporated into traditional waterborne and UV-curable waterborne binders is studied. The resistance of various paint films containing different matting agents to acetone, ethyl acetate, water, black coffee, olive oil, tea, red wine, beer, detergent, ink, sodium carbonate, vinegar, ethanol, and ammonia was tested for varying periods. The matting agents with the best performance were selected and the tests were repeated with additional silica, waxes, and other additives in an attempt to improve the chemical resistance of the applied film. The combination of a silica with various additives helped to maintain or even improve the basic chemical resistance properties of the resin system. Very interesting behaviour was found with nanosilica particles. Their high surface area probably enables a higher degree of crosslinking with the binders to thus improve the chemical resistance values. Both Teflon wavx and organosilane additives had the best effect, particularly in air-drying waterborne systems.
