Combination of microwave drying and UV curing for waterborne lacquers on wood surfaces
The microwave pre-treatment has effects on the surface quality, particularly for physically drying coating systems on an inert substrate such as glass. A reduction of the drying and curing process can be thus achieved. With very fast curing UV systems, lacquer properties, such as pendulum attenuation and glass transition, could be enhanced, which indicates an influencing of the crosslinking process. With wood substrates, water can be mobilized from the substrate and deposited in the lacquer coat, which again affects the resulting surface quality, depending on the species of wood, wood moisture and applied microwave power. This water mobilization leads to blistering, to somewhat reduced adhesive strength and higher roughness of the surface, but not to substantial deterioration of quality in regard to furniture manufacture. Depending on the microwave power employed, blistering, surface film detachment indicating a resin softening or slight chipping of the cross-cut have been observed. Our results show that the application of microwaves for quicker drying of waterborne lacquers on wood and wood-based substrates must exactly be adjusted to the conditions of the substrate and the lacquer, otherwise some loss of quality ensues. This feature has to be taken into account when considering the microwave drying as a possibility in industrial manufacturing. Unfortunately, a finer adjustment of microwave performance has not been possible so far regarding the plant technology.
