Application of weathering steel for bridges
Uncoated weathering steel has drawn attention for its superior corrosion resistance that enables life cycle cost (LCC) saving and renders a unique appearance to bridges, buildings, etc. Also, weathering steel is expected to be the main steel for bridges in Korea considering life cycle cost of bridge structures. In this paper, an overview of development and application of weathering steel for bridges is described. The brief outline of weathering steel and the environmental conditions for the proper use are presented. Also, the application experiences for bridges inclusive of several examples of buildings are discussed, and recent research topics for weathering steel are introduced. As the paper shows, Korea has shown good performance and application examples related to weathering steel bridges within a short period of time, thanks to steel companies that have actively been engaged in research and development activities to develop new steel consumption market. Currently, since owners and architects are aware of the outstanding characteristics of weathering steel such as life cycle cost savings, environment-friendliness, and unique appearance, voluntary adoption and application are expected. Moreover, various studies have been made to expand the application area beyond the scope of existing weathering steel, including ultra thick plate (over 50mm), coastal weathering steel, and structural member for modular building systems. After all weathering steel is going to be a very promising material. (Chinese translation of this paper on pages 163-172)
