Non-destructive testing of a post tensioned concrete bridge applying an automated measuring system
In order to analyze the state of a concrete bridge, non-destructive testing echo methods are developed to solve the following testing problems: - Thickness measurement - Localization of metal tendon ducts and determination of concrete cover - Localization of inhomogeneities in and around tendon ducts (e. g. grouting faults) - Localization of compaction faults and honeycombing in concrete. In the past, as NDT-methods impulse radar, ultrasonic-echo and impact-echo were successfully applied at selected concrete bridges in co-operation between German Highway Research Institute (BASt) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). The present contribution reports on a new collaborative work between the BAM and BASt: The development and application of an automated measuring system for testing large areas of a unicellular box bridge (up to 40 m2). The measuring devices (sensors) are fixed on a scanner, which can move within an adjustable grid width. In this way data are automatically collected from the carriageway and from a girder (partly measured from the inside of a box girder). The data are evaluated by means of three-dimensional data procession and reconstruction calculation. The results deriving from the non-destructive testing have been verified by destructive testing (core extraction). In general these results clarify that the applied NDT-techniques can be successfully used for diagnostics of concrete elements.
