Ultrasonic health monitoring of prestressing tendons
There are approximately 3000 prestressed and post-tensioned concrete bridges constructed in the United States each year. Steel tendons that are pre-tensioned to counteract the effect of design loads are critical to structural performance of these bridges. The tendons are typically embedded within the concrete, and there are currently no accepted nondestructive evaluation techniques to determine the condition of these tendons. This research examines the application of embedded Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) designed to launch and receive ultrasonic waves propagating within the tendons. Deterioration of the tendons is determined by its effect on the amplitude and velocity of the ultrasonic waves. Proof of concept testing and system design is described.
