Long term monitoring of the new Cologne - Rhine/Main high-speed line (LTM KRM)
The new KRM (high-speed line link from Cologne to the Rhine/Main region) is one of the most spectacular German infrastructure projects of the last few years. The project is predominantly concerned with technical and engineering issues relating to the permanent way. The results obtained from the very comprehensive monitoring programmes so far present a very positive overall picture. With the exception of a few isolated shortcomings, which have mostly been attributable to construction faults, the state of the line is excellent. Even at running speeds of 300 km/h, the KRM high-speed line offers the best levels of ride comfort within the German railway network. The track geometry has remained essentially unchanged since going into service and the slab track is still in excellent condition. Instances of localised settlement have all been compensated for by using the vertical-adjustment reserves at the rail support points. Almost two and a half years after laying down the track, the only component requiring maintenance are the rails. Despite its numerous innovations, the KRM high-speed line linking Frankfurt and Cologne has proved itself fully capable of meeting operational demands and has fulfilled all expectations.
