The use of nano-scaled alumina in alumina-based refractory materials
Increasing quality requirements as well as growing prices for raw materials and energy are driving forces for seeking novel technologies and new raw materials in ceramics. Since several years the use of nano-scaled powders is discussed especially for high-tech ceramics. The nano-scaled materials are very reactive due to their high specific surface area. For this reason the sintering process starts at very low temperatures. The improvement of the mechanical properties and the reduction of firing temperature and thus lower energy consumption are the main benefits of the use of nano-scaled oxides in high-tech ceramic applications. Recently the utilization of nano-scaled powders was enlarged to standard ceramic applications such as refractories. For instance, the use of nano-scaled powders in carbon-bonded MgO-C refractories has been discussed. In this paper the use of fumed alumina as a sintering additive and as a new cement-free binder for refractory materials is investigated.
