New approach measuring the sulfate resistance of cements
The current standard test method for sulfate resistance of cements (ASTM C1012) requires measurements be performed on mortars for up to one year, posing a barrier to the development of new hydraulic cements. Also, the exposure of the materials to various types of environments such as constant immersion or wet-dry cycles, leads to different modes and kinetics of deterioration. This paper will investigate new test methods that were developed to measure the performance of cement and concrete during exposure to sulfate solutions. The method for cement with constant immersion consists of expansion measurements on small samples and was proposed to ASTM as a new standard test method. The change in specimen configuration allows a decrease in test time by about a factor of four. Another test, still under development will be discussed where the specimens are submitted to wet-dry cycling.
