Non-contact surface wave scanning of pavements using a rolling microphone array
We present experiments with a rolling multichannel microphone array where measurements can be taken continuously while moving. Leaky air-coupled surface waves are measured with ordinary non-directional audio microphones. Results show that the thickness and shear wave velocity of a concrete slab can be evaluated non-destructively using an ordinary relatively cheap condenser microphone as a noncontact receiver. This opens up the possibility for faster on-the-fly surface wave testing of pavements since surface contact is no longer required. Initial tests with the rolling microphone array show reasonable repeatability between different scan lines over the same concrete slab. By using the non-contact array 16 data sets per scan line were recorded in a couple of seconds compared to several hours of work with the conventional stationary accelerometer approach.
