Experimental investigations of concrete dowels in composite floor system
Paper deals with a new composite floor system consisting of steel web and upper and lower concrete slabs. The space between the slabs is intended for placing HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) installations. The steel web and the concrete slabs are connected with the use of concrete dowels. As literature studies indicate, there are four fracture mechanisms of concrete dowels due to shearing force. The carrying capacities corresponding to two of these mechanisms, namely the local pressure of concrete and cutting out of steel web from the composite section, can be increased with the use of spiral reinforcement. It may be placed in these slab areas, where the concrete is heavily loaded. In order to investigate the influence of this additional reinforcement on shear resistance of concrete dowels the authors of the paper designed a number of Push-out tests of the floor section in full scale. The floor sections with and without spiral reinforcement have been compared in terms of load-carrying ability as well as shear flexibility.
